Introducing Second Saturdays

Your DC Guilford alumni event schedule just got easier to predict in 2010.

Second Saturdays kicked off March 13 with a lunch and social hour at Vapiano in Chinatown (details below). As the name suggests, the DC Regional Alumni Council intends to sponsor an event on the Second Saturday of each month. Here at-a-glance is the schedule for the next few Second Saturday events to get us started:

We are trying this experiment to bring some consistency to the schedule, and help alumni predict future event dates even before all the details are released (i.e. August 14, September 11, October 9, November 13 and December 11). And yes, we will occasionally sponsor additional events on other days. But, we think adding an anchor day to the schedule will help alumni with planning and make it easier to spread the word about our activities. Let us know what you think at dcalumni@guilford.edu. And if you have a lead for a good picnic venue (or care to open your home in the event of a rainout) we would love to hear that too.

From the Arena Stage Website:
The Duke comes home to the Lincoln with Sophisticated Ladies, the award-winning musical revue that explores the legacy of our local jazz hero starring Broadway legend Maurice Hines. This glorious re-creation of the big band sound features some of the most memorable music from the Roaring Twenties to the Swing Era, including such classic songs as "It Don't Mean a Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing," "Take the 'A' Train," "Satin Doll" and the haunting "In a Sentimental Mood." With one show-stopping number after another, this stylish and brassy retrospective travels through a history of American song and dance, from Charleston to swing to virtuosic tap dancing. It's an abundance of riches from the most sophisticated and sassy jazz king of all.

Help Us Deliver an Exciting Event Lineup in 2010 by Hosting an Event

The DC Regional Alumni Council is working to bring you an exciting event lineup in 2010. Over the next few months we will highlight our plans and identify ways that members of our community can help bring these events to life.

One frequent challenge we face is finding suitable locations for our events. While some events can be held at public locations, others work best in a more private or personal seting. If you have a home or office you may be interested in opening up to an alumni event, contact us at dcalumni@guilford.edu . We are happy to discuss your interests and help identify an event suitable for your location, be it a picnic/BBQ, game night, career networking event, discussion group, or something completely different (perhaps an idea all your own?). If you decide to host, we can match you up with an event planner or offer full logistical support and backup should you opt to plan the event yourself. Contacting us puts you under no obligation, so why not open the dialogue and explore the possibilities today?

It's easy. If you are interested, contact the DC Regional Council. All you have to do is pick an activity and a place and show up: we'll handle the communications and publicize the event! Some examples of past events include:
  • Performance by the Capitol Steps
  • Tour of the Botanic Gardens, led by Joe Keiger '50
  • Tour of the Old Executive Office Building
  • Volunteer cleanup day on the Anacostia River
  • Guilford football game at Catholic U.
  • Bowling nights
